More than 230 community college trustees, presidents and staff members from across the state met in Raleigh April 9-11 for the NCACCT 2014 Law/Legislative Seminar. Attendees had multiple opportunities to learn about hot topics and current issues expected to be addressed in the 2014 legislative short session. Representative Edgar Starnes shared his thoughts on the upcoming session at the Opening Luncheon Session on Thursday, and regular NC Spin panelists Mr. Brad Crone, Mr. Chris Fitzsimon, Mr. John Hood and NCACCT lobbyist Ms. Joyce Peters shared their opinions and predictions in a panel discussion following breakfast on Friday. Other important topics discussed were Performance Funding, Legal Issues Regarding Trustee Appointments, and the Affordable Care Act and its effect on community colleges. Attendees also had the privilege of hearing from Cape Fear Community College alumni and the 2014 Dallas Herring Award recipient, Mr. Olujimi “Jamir” Jumoke, as he shared the journey that led him to Cape Fear Community College and the success he has achieved as a result.
