NCACCT News Briefs, September 2014: 2014 Leadership Seminar Recap

2014 Leadership Seminar

More than 250 community college trustees, presidents and staff members from across the state met in Charlotte September 3-5 for the NCACCT 2014 Leadership Seminar.  Attendees had the opportunity to hear from, and ask questions of, Governor Pat McCrory, Secretary of Commerce Sharon Decker, Dr. Scott Ralls, and Mr. Glenn Sherrill, director of the N.C. Economic Development Board.  These state leaders served on a panel discussing recent changes in Economic Development in North Carolina and the community colleges’ role in these new initiatives.  The panel was moderated by Linda Weiner, Vice President of Engagement and Strategic Innovation with the NC Community Colleges.  Other hot topics addressed at the seminar included Campus Assaults, Student Loan Default, Social Media for Community College Trustees, and many others. Trustees also had the opportunity to receive Ethics Training, Orientation for New Trustees and Reappointed Trustee Training.

The NCACCT Executive Board hosted a reception Wednesday evening in honor of Ms. Lyn Austin, Chair of the NCACCT Executive Board and the Johnston Community College Board of Trustees. Ms. Austin has been selected as the 2014 ACCT Southern Region Trustee Leadership Award recipient and will be honored at the Leadership Congress in Chicago next month.

Evaluations received at the conclusion of the seminar indicated that attendees were extremely happy with the event as a whole and that NCACCT’s seminars continue to be an excellent source of information and education for trustees.
